iPad and iPhone views of SideReel app

Streamlining fandom

The SideReel iOS app was designed to help television fans find, watch, and track favorite shows conveniently from their mobile devices. As the Director of Product & UX, I worked closely with a visual designer and a software engineer to develop a new experience for mobile that included an iPad version of the application. I provided UX design, interactive prototypes, and product management for the app. As the business owner, I produced reports on downloads, ratings, event metrics, and active users.

Process

To kick off the redesign process I interviewed SideReel fans and scoured app reviews. The most common improvement request was an iPad specific view. Additionally, users wanted improved tracker functionality to keep tabs on where they were on their favorite shows. I produced lo-fidelity concept wireframes to gain executive by in to build an improved app experience. From there I producted detailed flow diagrams illustrating the app functionality and higher fidelity wireframes. Working with a visual designer we iterated through several graphical concepts for skinning the wireframes. I worked closely with a software engineer, creating tickets in Pivotal Tracker and participating in daily standups and sprint planning sessions.

In addition to supporting a full-screen iPad view, the revised application made it easier for fans to quickly marked episodes for their favorite shows as watched by providing the mark function on the Tracker index screen. Filters will also included in the Tracker area, as well as new discovery features such as genres, new shows and top shows.
